Somehwere in our fmliay photo almubs I have photos of my grandmother and father going through the Canal on a ship. It is all so interesting. Lima Peru sounds so gobsmackingly excited. am going to look at your costa rica photos now.

Day 1 - Panama / Panama city

Arrival in Panama

Arrival in Panama City, welcome by your driver and transfer directly to the heart of lush vegetation to sit in a charming lodge, where your hosts, Fabrice and Sabrina are absolutely delicious (as Sabrina’s meals !) and will watch out that your stay be rewarding and fun. Welcome to Monkey Lodge! A tropical paradise at thirty minutes from the capital boiling.

Day 2 - Panama / Panama city

With Monkey Lodge’s boat start your first sensations in the Panama Canal. The channel is the economic heart of the country, a feat of technology incredible especially when one understands that the system lock gates was designed 100 years ago … The channel is national pride, a topic that feeds the daily press and local Panamanians conversations. So, as it is not about to miss. After some explanations taken at the visitor center of Miraflores locks, you will leave the channel, you will come across huge Panamax boats and your boat will seem ridiculously tiny but it will lead you easily to the small green islands, habitat lazy monkeys, coatis and many migratory birds.

Day 3 - Panama / Panama city

Embera Puru community, the Gatun Locks and the train

Panama - Embera - pirogue

Out to the Atlantic coast.In the bend of a tributary of the Chagres River, you land at Embera Puru community who welcomes you with flutes and drums, the whole village is under the big hut braided palm; this is an opportunity to exchange, share, visit their school, enjoy their rich crafts. The shimmering fabrics dry between two houses on stilts, children dance and run, it’s recreation time. The village chief will teach you some secrets of remedies with plants found in the nearby forest and tattoo art. Embera community is a rare heritage of pre-Columbian civilization which is necessary to preserve. After a lunch of grilled fish and plantains, back to the Gatun Lake and visit its impressive locks. Three doors allow huge ships to climb the 23 m height difference between the Caribbean Sea and the lake. Then travel on the train that runs between jungle and channel from Caribbean side to the Pacific one.

Day 4 - Panama / Panama city

Panama City, the business city and the Casco Viejo

In contrast with the previous day, today is for the business center of the capital with its large glass towers, its yellow taxis that run at high speed, the reggaeton loud in commercial shops, the malls where « go for shopping » makes sense, its traffic jams, its super trendy lounge bars … Crossing the modern city, ride on Cerro Ancón mountain overlooking the city, beautiful panoramic views of the entire city and the canal. Walk in the Casco Viejo, houses pastel try to resist the passage of time which seems suspended between the 18th and 20th century. This historic area is comparable to Cartagena in Colombia or Antigua in Guatemala,  is a gem with architecture as diverse as colonial, neoclassical, afro-caribbean and art deco where you can stroll the cobbled streets, aimlessly … Installation in beautiful houses converted into charming hotels. By night,  we recommend a dinner surrounded by a thousand lights flashing in every direction in the modern city.

Day 5 - Panama / Panama city

A day to wander …

Panama - Biomuseo

Today day is free, why not rent a bike and go for a ride on Amador Causeway to see the boats pass under the bridge of the Americas or a jog in the fresh greenness Park Metropolitano, the breath of fresh air in the city …? Soon will open the Biomuseum designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry, a true hymn to biodiversity! Currently, during weekends, you can visit the model room and a very informative slideshow on the work of the architect and have access to the museum building. Then, just to immerse yourselves in the Spanish conquest and its conflicts with pirates, discovery of the ruins of the first city location, Panama La Vieja. Otherwise, walk in Casco Viejo, have a refreshing raspado under the arcades of the Plaza Francia, enjoy a ceviche at the fish market, go to the Canal Museum, spend a nice time in coffee-gallery-mode Diablo Rosso to see the works of talented artists including those of Miky Fabrega.

Day 6 - Panama / San Blas

San Blás, Kuna and Caribbean

Early morning  flight to San Blás archipelago, an archipelago of over 350 islands and islets of which only 60 are inhabited, it is the only territory of the country populated and administered exclusively by the Kuna Indians benefiting from a regime of territorial autonomy (comarcas). Postcard images with its  coconut trees swaying in the breeze, white sand and transparent waters mealy populated by colorful fish. You will meet the Kuna, matriarchal society, and their simple way of life rooted in the traditions. The Kuna live on fishing and farming, but the basis of the local economy is the sale of coconuts, the coconut palm is ubiquitous on all islands. Kuna women are pretty, and sew molas, a superposition of different colored fabrics, offered for sale. Installation in a rustic cabin, perched on stilts or on the sand, lulled by a hammock in the wind, no luxury here, feeling of far away …

Day 7 - Panama / San Blas

Relax, snorkel and lobster

Day 8 - Panama / île Coiba

Back to Panama City – Coiba Island, a World Heritage

Early return to Panama City. Leap into the Pacific! From Santiago de Veraguas starts the adventure to reach the beach of Gorgona and the Coco Mango Coiba lodge and its casitas under a canopy of trees. The situation of the lodge is simply unique, because at an hour’s boat is the Coiba National Park and its special zone of marine protection registered since 2005 as World Heritage by UNESCO. Here is a paradise for divers, even with a mask and snorkel and also for the fishing. The park of 2701 km ² consists of Coiba Island and 38 smaller islands with a unique biodiversity and joins the club of five! Located in the maritime corridor backup Tropical Eastern Pacific, it is one of five national parks among Coco Island in Costa Rica, Malpelo and Gorgona in Colombia and the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador. Just that! Classified as World Heritage by Unesco recently, the rich waters of the park and also the forests of Coiba Island were so far one of the best kept   biodiversity secret  in the world. On the island you will find a wide variety of birds, mammals and endemic plants, it is also the last refuge for many endangered species which have virtually disappeared from the rest of Panama such as the crested eagle and scarlet macaw.

Days 9 & 10 - Panama / île Coiba

Biodiversity around Coiba Island

Panama - Isla Coibita

Two days by boat to explore the beautiful ocean-sea coral reefs. You will find, among others, humpback whales that come to give birth (between mid-August and mid-December), dolphins, green turtles, whale sharks, tiger sharks, whitetip sharks, hammerhead sharks (not less 33 species of sharks found in Coiba), giant mantas, orcas, and 760 species of marine fish, moray eels, seahorses, parrotfish, groupers … Anyway, paradise funds submarines.
